tool 1992 yilindaki ilk cikardiklari opıate ep'sinden beri karsi konulamaz seksi heavy metal (ya da cogularinca progressive metal) yapiyor. hayatimda ikiden fazla (hem de buyuk bir zevkle sahnede seyrettigim) tek grup tool. pink floyd'un sahnesi, depeche mode'un seksiligi, pantera'nin sertligi inanilmaz bir kombinasyon tool. hani denir ya, "anlatmakla olmaz, dinlemeniz, yasamaniz lazim".
daha opıate'nin acilis notalari sweat ve hush ile tool'un hala korudugu sound'u ile tanisiyorsunuz. cok saglam ve agir agir calan israrci bir bas gitar, zaman zaman sertlesen elektro gitar, fisildamak ile ciglik cigliga bagirmak arasi gid en bir vokalist...duyarsiz kalinamayacak karizmada bir vokalist maynard james keenan, ayni kalibrede bas gitarist paul d'amour, elektro gitar adam jones....opıate'in icinde tom morello'ya da tesekkur ediyorlar, ki sound olarak en yakin olduklari grup rage agaınst the machıne. ben sahnede zack'in james keenan ile beraber killing in the name'i beraber soylediklerine sahit olmustum, gercekten birbirlerinin yedegi olabilecek gruplar. tek farkla, hip hop/rap ile alakasi yok keenan'in grubunun, aksine ,tori amos ile duet yapabilecek karizmada (boys for pele albumunde yaptilar), "tanrim nasil yani?" dedirtecek eddie vedder'den -daha iyi-, dave gahan'dan -daha seksi-, trent reznor'dan -daha sert- bir vokal...
ılk studyo albumleri undertow 1993 yilinda cikti. grubun en ilginc kararlarindan biri, video klip yapmalari, ama golem dedikleri tastan adamlarin animasyonlari -oldukca ilginc ve gorsel acidan agzinizi acikta birakacak- kliplerini olusturuyor. bir tek tool klibinde grup gozukmus degil henuz. hatta a perfect cırcle yan grubu olmasa, david fincher imzali judıth klibini gormesek james keenan neye benziyor konsere gitmeyen bilmez. undertow'un bir diger ozelligi, icinde midenizi bulunduracak bir cirilciplak sisko kadin resimleri olmasi, ve bir tanesinde yine ciplak bir erkege sarilmis resminin olmasi...esasen gormeniz gereken resimler ama ac karnina...grubun bu albumden elbetteki en meshur iki sarkisi prıson sex ve de sober. ozellikle sober, sahsimca halen 90'larda yapilmis en onemli en oncu 10 rock sarkisindan biri...."don't try to love me, ı will only complicate you" temasini iceren sarki, "why can't we drink forever, ı just want to start this over" seklinde gidiyor...bu album o yillarda universite seviyesindeki herkesin odasinda bangir bangir caliyordu, hatta bu album ozellikle bizim universitenin vucut gelistirme salonunda sesi sonuna kadar acik caliyordu, o kadar tutmustu.
grup 1996 yilinda aenıma ile geri dondu. kapagi mutlaka gozunuze carpmistir, 3 boyutlu isik yansimasi kapakli aenıma o sene billboard'a 2 numaradan girmisti. hem de bir tek single/video klip/radyo destegi olmaksizin. tool'un artik tori amos/nine ınch nails kalibresinde bir cult takipcisi vardi. rolling stone dergisi kritikleri aenıma icin "tool shove their iron-spike riffing and shock-therapy polemics right up the claustrophobic dead end of so-called alternative metal in the name of a greater metaphysical glory – something along the fuzzy lines of jungian cyberoccultism. that's all very admirable and even a bit impressive; anyone who tries to elevate heavy music above cock-rock clown time is to be encouraged" bahsettikleri temalar, olum-seks-yasam, tool'u diger rakiplerinden farkli yere koyar. bu albumun hıt diyebilecegimiz bir sarkisi yok, albumun uzerinde tool ya da aenıma yazmadigi gibi, arkasinda sarki adlari bile yazmiyor, hatta ilk ciktigi zaman sarkilarin adlari song 1, song 2, song 3 zannediliyordu, daha sonraki basimlarinda "stınkfıst", "eulogy" ve "h" diye giden isimleri oldugunu anladik...
cok uzun sure tool toplanip aenıma'nin devamini yapamaz oldu, vokalist keenan buna sikilmis olmali ki, kendine arada a perfect cırcle diye bir grup kurdu. mer de nomsalbumu, billboard'a 4 numaradan girdi. bu amerika'da ilk kez oluyordu (bir grubun "ilk" albumunun bu kadar yuksek noktadan girdigi tek olay a perfect cırcle'dir amerika'da). esasen tool'dan hicbir farki yoktu muzik olarak a perfect cırcle, ama olum ve seks yerine, daha romantik bir albumdu, ki bunu sarki isimlerithe hollow | magdalena | rose | judith | orestes'den de anlayabilirsiniz...rolling stone album icin "enter tool's occasionally dress-wearing singer, maynard james keenan, who added an almost operatic angst to songs and who characterizes a perfect circle as "a right-brain, feminine result." eccentric, melodramatic and perpetually yearning for transcendence of some sort, keenan blesses the strafing, smashing pumpkins-damaged riffage of "judith" with biblical references". daha once bahsettigim gibi bir tool projesi icin ilk kez harbi bir klibi vardi judith'in ve ceken de, az buz degil, seven ve fıght club yonetmeni david fincher'di. yine bu zamanlarda tool, salıval isimli dvd'yi cikardi. kritiklerce "the extra technology of dvds is geared at the moment toward making the product less mysterious and more fully explicated, and toward giving the consumer more control. but with its serious fetishism and king crimson affinities, tool is a band of control freaks, and mystery is the biggest, baddest card in its hand" salıval grubu saran esrar perdesini aralamakta yardimci olmadi.
ve tool sonunda toplanip lateralus'u yapti. album hic surpriz olmayarak, rem, depeche mode gibi agir toplarin ayni gun album cikarmasina ragmen onlarin uzerine basip bir numaradan listelere girdi. albumun yine cok ilginc bir kapagi var. siyah uzerine bir insan anatomisi...albumun bu sefer hit sarkisi var, hem de bomba gibi sober'i aratmayacak schısm...kritikler bile albumu anlamakta zorlaniyorlar, radiohead'in kıd abir bu album iki...rolling stone'a gore "you need time to deal with lateralus - a lot more than the seventy-seven minutes it takes just to play the whole disc. and for much of that time, you will wonder: what the fuck is going on here? drums, bass and guitars move in jarring cycles of hyperhowl and near-silent death march". tool'un esas tarzindan farkli degil, o yuzden bir kıd a ya da yakinda cikacakamnesıactarzi bir hayal kirikliligi soz konusu degil, sadece album daha cok opera egilimli denilebilir. ıcinde 3-4 sarki arka arkaya ayni temayi isleyebiliyor mesela...."so much of tool's third full-length studio album - five years in the waiting, due in part to extended legal turbulence - makes so little sense at first. but that is one of lateralus' most endearing qualities: ıt rolls out its pleasures and coherence slowly, even stubbornly. most of the so-called new metal has the dramatic heft of thin air. but the l.a.-based tool - guitarist adam jones, vocalist maynard james keenan (back from his other band, a perfect circle), drummerdanny careyand bassist justin chancellor - are obsessed with weight, the cumulative force of muscle, imagination and immaculately wrought suspense. tool have everything it takes to beat you senseless; they proved it on 1993's undertow and their 1996 grammy-winning beast, aenima. here, tool go to extravagant lengths to drown you in sensation". albumdeki sarkilarin en kisasi 6-7 dakika, kisaca "buyuk" dusunulmus bir album, bi kac sarki 10 dakikayi da asiyor...tool'u tool yapan vokal kapi gibi yerinde "suuuuucccckkk! meeeeeeee!! drrrryyyyyy!!!" gibi cigliklar mevcut..."but the reason you don't keep checking your watch is because tool never play like they're just killing time. "ı know/the pieces fit," keenan swears repeatedly against the rolling thunder of "schism." lateralus is a monster of many parts, made to be swallowed whole" her tool albumunde olan "acaba yine mi ayni sarkiyi dinliyorum" hissi yine hakim, rage gibi biraz, ama kendi tarzlarinin, yine rage gibi, en iyi (hatta digerlerinin yaninda -tek-) grubu, o yuzden tarzi seviyorsaniz veya alisinca sizi rahatsiz etmiyor.
gunumuzun en mistik, en esrarengiz ve en seksi rock grubu tool. baslamak icin belki lateralus yanlis, bu birazdark side of the moon'u dinlemeden wall'a atlamak gibi birsey ama zararin neresinden donulse kardir. avrupa'da cok az taniniyor tool, mutlaka kosesinden kenarindan edinin, hic olmadi opıate bile bir bas yapit, birakin aenıma ve undertow'u...
- rem , depeche mode ve radiohead gibi milletin ezbere saydığı ve popülerliği bariz bir şekilde bu ilahi grubun (tool) onlarca katı olan 3 piyasa grubun albümleriyle aynı gün çıkmasına rağmen her birinin eline verip en çok satanlar listesine tepeden giriş yapmış bir sanat eseridir.

- tek kelime ile harika, iki kelime ile insan üstü. tool seni kınıyorum ve sana laflar hazırladım. üç sene öncesine kadar çalınabilen bir parça olmadığına inandırmıştın beni. sonra youtube gibi sitelerden biraz aklımı çeldin. hepsini yaptın iyi tamam da 7 eylül 2007 de konuşma yeteneğimi kaybettirdin bana 10 dakika süresince. peki biz küçük insancıklardan ne istedin? neydi bizim hatamız? nasıl bu hale geldik?
